OUR FOUNDER’S STORY
In June of 2014, I began working as a Parent Aide in Phoenix, AZ. I sat with dozens of parents and listened to their stories about losing their children and the work they were doing to get them back. I asked about their struggles. I asked them what was working. There were two common themes that emerged from all of their stories, so I began to listen for these and focus on them first in our services.
First, there was confusion. Parents were unclear about who to communicate with, what they were supposed to be doing, and what was expected in order for them to reunite with their kids.
The second constant is that successful parents had someone in their corner… a champion who pushed them and offered them hope when they felt ready to give up.
As I began to focus on education and encouragement, very rarely would parents give up. The majority of parents fought harder to reunite with their children and were more motivated to work the case plan to its end.
There’s something here. What if there was a way to bridge the gap? What if those with knowledge of the system, but little relationship, could have an easy way to provide encouragement? What if those with relationship, but little understanding of the system, could provide guidance?
This was the birth of Parent Base.
I began researching and found programs and studies across the country documenting some of the greatest factors leading to successful dependency outcomes. Consistently, they all seemed to fall into one of three categories: community organizations like support groups, churches, food pantries, or employment; communication with the members of a support team such as case mangers, attorneys, friends and family, or participation in some type of peer mentor program. The Parent Base model was built off of these core components for a healthy support base.
Together with an amazing advisory board, we began to layout and design a tool where parents could be guided through a dependency process and given the support and encouragement they need to push through to the end.
Parent Base comes from a genuine desire to see parents succeed because children deserve healthy families.
– ADVISORY BOARD –
Joe and Cassie Mason
Founder & Creator
Joe began his work as a Parent Aide in June 2014. As he began meeting with parents working to reunite with their children, he learned of the struggles they were facing and the resilience they displayed. After countless conversations with parents, friends, other professionals in the field, and his wife, he was encouraged to start a non-profit designed to offer solutions for parents to reunite with their children. Parent Base has been a blessing to be a part of and Joe recognizes God as the One opening doors and providing direction to grow an organization of integrity and influence. Cassie has been an incredible support in the founding and growth of Parent Base and uses her skills in writing to ensure clarity and consistency in communication.
Joe and Cassie have been married for twelve years and have two children, four chickens… and a bunny.
Peggy Chase has had a tremendous influence on the development of Parent Base. As CEO of Terros Health, Peggy offers years of experience and insight into the behavioral health system and non-profit organizations. More than her experience as a professional, Peggy has a heart to see parents succeed. She has offered countless hours mentoring and coaching our team. As a part of our board, she ensures that Parent Base is an effective tool in our community and remains available to those who most benefit from it.
Brian and Yvette Hammonds
Brian and Yvette have played an important role in getting Parent Base started and providing the accountability and dialogue to keep it moving forward. From the beginning, their heart and passion for family preservation has been apparent and Brian has pressed for the structure that builds a healthy organization. Brian’s focus on our board is to make sure that biblical principles are followed in everything we do and that we show the love of Jesus as we care for people. Yvette focuses on making sure that an atmosphere of gratitude is present in the way we respond to those who invest financially, with their time, or in sharing their personal experiences.
Brian and Yvette have been married for 13 years and have five wonderful children to keep their lives exciting!
One of the first times Adam learned about Parent Base, he was handed a piece of paper with an idea for a website sketched out in markers. Adam took that concept and created a powerful internet presence. Adam is intentional about the colors and fonts he uses and way content is organized on a website because he wants to provide an effective and honoring experience for parents. Adam believes firmly that parents have what it takes to succeed and well-designed technology can help them achieve their goals. As part of our board, Adam is responsible for an elegant internet experience.
Scott and Maria Gates
From the beginning, when Parent Base was still just an idea, Scott and Maria helped move it forward with the constant message, “This is a worthy cause and it will work.” As CEO of Western Window Systems, Scott has pressed Parent Base to establish a sound business model for sustainable growth and continued innovation. Maria has a background in nonprofit management and printed design. Her investment of time and talent is the reason our printed materials and resources reflect elegance.
Scott and Maria have been married for 14 years and have two softball-playing princesses living in their home.
Jonathan Norton joined our team in response to a firm commitment to financial integrity. In the past, Jonathan and his wife have lived in Africa, where they worked with local business owners to create sound financial models. Now, as a member of the Parent Base advisory board, Jonathan ensures that we stick to our budget, appropriately navigate risk, and use the resources we have to accomplish the work we’ve been given.
Jonathan is also pretty proud of his Chicago Cubs for finally becoming the champions he always knew they could be.
